Biography

From a four-point rookie performance in a St. Stephen basketball game in 1931 to his selection as the 1970 Sportsman of the Year in Saint John, Ralph Fitzpatrick has been “Mr. Basketball” in New Brunswick. That first appearance noted him most exciting points. But hundreds of points and countless games filled his career until in 1951 he turned his attention to administration, first at the provincial level and then as a member of the national executive.Unquestionably, it was “Fitz” who brought organization out of turmoil when decisive and vital leadership were most needed. Saint John did well to honour him for thirty years of community service; New Brunswick quite appropriately recognizes him for service to his sport throughout the province. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, May 22nd, 1971.
