Biography

This province is not noted for producing baseball players of major-league calibre; thus when a native son makes it to the big leagues, it is an event worthy of recognition. John J. O’Brien played in the old National League for six years during the period from 1891 to 1899.During that time he performed as in infielder with six teams, including Brooklyn, Chicago, Washington and Pittsburgh; a compiled and respectable lifetime batting average of .254. In 1971 he was honoured by the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame, and it seems only fitting that New Brunswick also recognize his achievements in the world of sport. Enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 8, 1974.
